Elon Musk’s brain implant venture, Neuralink, secures a substantial investment of $280 million from Peter Thiel’s venture capital fund. The funding news was shared through X, the social media platform owned by Musk, which was previously known as Twitter.
The recent funding round, designated as Series D, was spearheaded by Founders Fund, a VC firm based in San Francisco and founded by Peter Thiel, a controversial billionaire who was a co-founder of PayPal.
In an announcement, Neuralink expressed great enthusiasm for the upcoming phase of its journey, highlighting the significance of this development.
Neuralink, a startup focused on brain-chip technology, aims to establish a direct connection between the human brain and computers using implanted devices. Elon Musk has been dedicated to this ambitious vision for five years now. However, the company has thus far confined its experimentation to animal subjects. There was a notable incident in involving the unfortunate death of a monkey during a project test where the animal was being trained to play the computer game Pong.
Throughout its developmental process, Neuralink has utilized macaque monkeys in its experiments. The company has been refining implantable chips equipped with Bluetooth technology that are inserted into the monkeys’ brains. These chips are claimed to facilitate communication with computers through a small receiver.
The influx of funding arrives on the heels of Musk’s announcement that Neuralink is moving closer to human trials. In December, during a recruitment event, Musk revealed that the majority of paperwork required for submission to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been completed. If all goes well, human testing could commence within the next six months.
However, internal sources have expressed concerns about the company’s pace, alleging that rushed efforts have led to unintended animal fatalities and prompted a federal investigation. This was reported in a Reuters article from December.
Before Neuralink’s brain implant technology can reach widespread production and market availability, it must undergo regulatory approval. The FDA outlined its initial thoughts on brain-computer interface devices in a paper released in 2021, acknowledging the rapid advancements in this field.
In a tweet shared on Monday, Neuralink announced its plans for expansion and invited interested individuals to join the company in tackling engineering challenges aimed at restoring vision and mobility.
