Rejected by Sharks, Returned as a Shark: Jamie Siminoff's Remarkable Journey to Success

Jamie Siminoff’s story is a lesson on perseverance and determination. From being rejected on Shark Tank to becoming a guest Shark and eventually selling his company, Ring, for over a billion dollars to Amazon, Siminoff’s journey is nothing short of inspiring.

It all started in 2011 when Siminoff, who was 35 at the time, was going through an entrepreneurial crisis. While tinkering in his garage, he came up with an idea to create a Wi-Fi-enabled video doorbell that would allow him to see a delivery person at his front door while he was in his garage. This idea turned into Doorbot, which he later rebranded as Ring.

In 2013, Siminoff went on Shark Tank to pitch his startup, Doorbot. Most of the sharks rejected to invest in his project for different reasons. The only shark who gave him a chance was Kevin O’Leary. He gave Siminoff an offer of $700k for a 10% royalty that would drop to 7% when the $700k had been recouped and he would immediately receive 5% of the company’s equity. Siminoff declined and suggested a deal of $700k in the form of loan at 10% interest and 3% equity in the company which O’Leary rejected.

Siminoff exited the room with a very disappointed and sad expression. However, Siminoff’s appearance on the show gave his company much-needed visibility and attracted the attention of Richard Branson, who went on to invest in it.

Siminoff continued to work hard on his startup, eventually renaming it Ring. In February 2018, Amazon acquired Ring in a deal worth over $1 billion. That same year, Siminoff received a call from a producer at Shark Tank, inviting him to appear as a guest Shark in the 2018 season. Siminoff quickly accepted the invitation.

Siminoff’s return to Shark Tank as a guest Shark was a testament to his perseverance and determination. Siminoff also made sure not to repeat the Sharks’ mistake and offered deals to contestants and startups that the other Sharks were not interested in. The interesting thing is at the time he returned to Shark Tank, his net worth was believed to exceed that of every shark on the show who had turned him down.
