ANA Airlines Glitch: $10,000 Business Class Tickets Sold for $300 Due to an Error on the Airline's Vietnam Website

An airline glitch on Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) website resulted in the sale of business class tickets for a fraction of the price. A currency conversion error on the airline’s Vietnam website caused the tickets to be listed for a few hundred dollars instead of the $10,000 that they usually cost. As a result, eagle-eyed travelers snapped up the bargains, including a round-trip ticket from Jakarta to Honolulu via Tokyo for $550 instead of the usual $8,200.

The airline has stated that it will honor the tickets for those who were quick enough to book and pay, but those who only reserved the tickets will have to pay a “just price.” ANA has not disclosed the number of people who secured the discount tickets and is investigating the cause of the bug and the extent of the damage.

This incident is not the first time an airline has accidentally sold premium seats at a steep discount. In 2019, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. also sold first- and business-class tickets from Vietnam to the US for as little as $675, when the normal price would have been as much as $16,000. The airline also honored those fares.

While it’s not unusual for airlines to make mistakes in pricing, it’s rare for them to sell premium seats at such deep discounts. The fact that the airlines have chosen to honor the mistakenly priced tickets is a good move, as it shows that they value their customers and are willing to make amends for their mistakes.

This blunder highlights the importance of companies ensuring that their websites and systems are functioning correctly and accurately.
