For people living with disabilities, performing everyday tasks can be challenging, especially when it comes to mobility. While there have been remarkable advancements in communication and operational technologies for assistive devices, there is still room for improvement. Augmental, an MIT Media Lab spinoff, has recently announced its revolutionary MouthPad that allows users to control a computer with their tongue.
Tomás Vega, one of Augmental’s co-founders, pointed out that many assistive devices rely on old technology, such as eye-tracking technology, mouth-controlled joysticks, or voice recognition assistance. These devices can be obtrusive, exhausting to use, and do not pay much heed to privacy. Furthermore, some of them can negatively impact the user’s teeth.
Augmental aims to create an interface that overcomes these limitations and provides a seamless, expressive, private, and slick experience. The MouthPad is an intraoral interface that enables hands-free control of Bluetooth-connected devices. It is similar to a dental retainer or plate, but instead of holding false teeth in place, it allows users to control devices with their tongue.
Each MouthPad is created individually using dental scans to ensure a perfect fit for the user. This customized design enables Augmental to make a thin, low-profile device that reduces the impact on speech, which is essential for speech interfaces.
Corten Singer, co-founder of Augmental, believes that the MouthPad’s development is part of the natural progression of technology. It speaks towards a more seamless human-machine integration that is coming in. Singer described how the MouthPad enables eight degrees of freedom to control it. The tongue can operate through the X and Y axes and deploy pressure. There are motion sensors that can detect head tracking and activity monitoring, and even bites can register as a click.
The wide variety of control options embedded in the MouthPad means that it can be used with many different devices. It can complement a setup for gamers with quadriplegia, enabling them to play using two joysticks simultaneously. It can also be used by designers who have issues doing click and drag in accurate ways.
Furthermore, the MouthPad has been connected to a sex toy to enable someone with a spinal cord injury to engage in autonomous sex play. Singer believes that this use case should not be regarded as peculiar or extraordinary. It is part of the conversation around universal accessibility and digital equity across the board, making people’s lives better.
The Augmental team has raised pre-seed funding from investors at MIT and Berkeley and recently launched its website where people can sign up for a MouthPad. However, the company needs to finish its FCC certification before shipping and selling devices.
