Bluesky, the new social media app that was launched in February this year, is gaining traction among journalists, politicians, and celebrities, thanks to its decentralized network that provides users with more control over the service’s operations, data storage, and content moderation. The app, which looks almost identical to Twitter in terms of profiles, timelines, and colors, was developed by Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey, and it has been described as “a new social network for microblogging.”
Bluesky, which was funded by Twitter until it became an independent organization in February , runs on a decentralized network, which means that it is not owned by any company or state. In a tweet last year, Dorsey expressed his regret that Twitter had become a company, and he clarified that a service that is a protocol cannot be owned by any company or state. Bluesky aims to build an open community around it, inclusive of companies and organizations, researchers, and civil society leaders.
Bluesky is appealing to Twitter users who are frustrated with the direction of the platform under owner Elon Musk. Since Musk took over Twitter, he has made several controversial changes to its features and policies, including the removal of blue check marks from prominent users. Some of the same high-profile users who are testing out Bluesky have been openly critical of Musk’s moves at Twitter. According to data.ai, Bluesky has been downloaded more than 375,000 times from the Apple App Store, and the waitlist continues to be flooded with signup requests. On the Google Play Store, Bluesky is described as having been downloaded more than 100,000 times.
Bluesky is invite-only as it ramps up support for the implementation of its network. Existing users get one invite code to share with someone for every two weeks they’re on the app. The sense of exclusivity has only added to the excitement of joining Bluesky, as Eve 6 wrote on Twitter: “Bluesky invite codes are the new blue check.”
The early shift toward Bluesky is a positive one, according to Mark Bartholomew, a professor at the University at Buffalo School of Law who writes about online privacy, as it gives social media users more choice over where they spend their time. “Competition might actually help users find the product features they want, like greater privacy protection, portability, and more significant content moderation,” he said. “Social media platforms have features that users dislike, but they still feel like they must accept them to just be in the online space where everyone else is.”
Although it is too early to predict with certainty whether Bluesky will be successful, users will find this new social network attractive due to some certain outstanding features it has but other apps don’t. It appears that Jack Dorsey knows how to seize the opportunity to introduce a social network that has learned from the mistakes of earlier and current social media apps. Let’s wait and see if Bluesky -really lives up to the claims given in order to compete in the cutthroat industry of social networks today
