Meta Verified Expands to India, Offering Enhanced Verification and Protection on Facebook and Instagram

Meta Verified, the paid verification system owned by Facebook and Instagram, is making its way to India. Following its recent expansion to Canada and the U.K., the feature is now available to users in India, with Brazil soon to follow. This move marks the latest step in Meta’s global rollout of its paid verification service, which initially debuted in the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand earlier this year.

While Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement mentioned Canada and the U.K. as “now available” markets, it turns out the feature had already been spotted rolling out in the U.K. last month. Furthermore, Meta confirmed that India is the only true new addition to the expansion. Users in India had previously seen the Meta Verified waitlist open up back in March, but access was limited at the time.

According to a spokesperson for Meta, the test for paid verification in India has begun and will gradually roll out to all eligible users on Instagram and Facebook over the next few weeks. The subscription in India can be directly purchased on the platforms, with a monthly price of ₹699 on iOS and Android. In the coming months, Meta will also introduce a web purchase option at ₹599 per month.

In addition to the expansion news, Zuckerberg’s message clarified that Meta will continue to honor the “legacy blue badge” globally for those who were verified before the launch of Meta Verified, based on the existing criteria. This distinguishes Meta’s approach from that of Twitter, which had initially announced plans to remove legacy badges from users in the hope of encouraging them to become paid subscribers. However, Twitter later updated the badges’ text to display the date of the user’s initial verification, including legacy verified accounts.

Meta justified its decision to maintain the verified badge for legacy accounts, stating that these accounts had already undergone a rigorous verification process and were potentially more susceptible to impersonation. Thus, preserving the verified badge is crucial for protecting both the account owners and the people who engage with them.

Meta’s subscription service, Meta Verified, offers more than just a checkmark. Upon providing a government ID to confirm their identity, subscribers gain access to “proactive” impersonation protection, direct customer support, and other perks such as exclusive stickers on Facebook and Instagram Stories, as well as Facebook Reels. Subscribers also receive 100 Stars per month on Facebook, which can be used to support other creators. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years old.

Compared to Twitter’s attempt to monetize power users through its Twitter Blue subscription, Meta’s approach appears to be more refined. Twitter Blue generated only $11 million in revenue on mobile during its first three months on the market. The service also faced challenges, as users adopted paid badges for impersonation purposes rather than protection from it.

Meta Verified pricing in India aligns with its base prices in the U.S., which are $11.99 per month on the web and $14.99 per month on mobile. In the U.K., the subscription pricing was set at £9.99 per month for both Instagram and Facebook.
