Instagram’s text-based app, Threads, has achieved an impressive milestone by reaching 100 million signups within just five days of its launch. The Twitter rival, introduced on June 6 (June 5 in the Americas), quickly gained traction among users, as confirmed by Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram.
Mosseri expressed his astonishment at the rapid growth, stating, “100 million people signed up for Threads in five days. I’m not sure I can wrap my mind around that fact. It’s insane; I can’t make sense of it.” He commended the hard work of the team behind the app and acknowledged that there is still a long way to go in terms of making it even better.
On the first day, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta (formerly Facebook), revealed that Threads attracted 2 million signups within two hours, 5 million signups in four hours, and 10 million registered users in just seven hours. By the next morning, the number surged past 30 million signups. Notably, Threads’ impressive growth is noteworthy considering that it has yet to launch in the European Union due to privacy concerns.
In comparison, OpenAI’s ChatGPT bot held the distinction of being one of the fastest-growing consumer products. It reached 10 million daily users in 40 days and achieved 100 million monthly users in under two months. However, Threads has already surpassed the milestone of 100 million monthly active users within its first month, indicating its popularity among users. The real challenge lies in retaining these users and ensuring continued engagement on the platform.
While many individuals are exploring Meta’s new text-focused social platform, there are some features that are currently missing from Threads. Notably, the app does not yet support ActivityPub, the protocol used for decentralized network posts. Although Meta has assured users that they are working on integrating this feature, until it becomes available, Threads will not be part of the fediverse.
In addition, the app currently lacks certain functionalities, such as a read-only web interface, support for post search, direct messages, hashtags, and a “Following” feed. Due to Instagram’s content guidelines, nudity is prohibited on the platform, unlike its Twitter alternative counterpart, Bluesky, which embraces a more open approach.
Despite these limitations, the achievement of reaching 100 million users in such a short period is no small feat. Threads has undoubtedly made a strong impression and appears to have established itself as a significant player in the social media landscape. With ongoing updates and improvements, it is likely to continue attracting and retaining a large user base.
