Apple has recently joined a growing list of companies that are prohibiting their employees from using generative AI tools, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The decision comes as a precautionary measure against potential data leaks, as ChatGPT retains user conversations to train OpenAI’s AI systems. With concerns over confidentiality and privacy, Apple has taken steps to safeguard sensitive information from being inadvertently exposed or collected.
Rationale behind the Restriction
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple has not only forbidden the use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT but has also cautioned its employees against utilizing GitHub’s AI programming assistant, Copilot. Renowned Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman tweeted that ChatGPT had been on Apple’s restricted software list “for months.”
The primary concern for Apple stems from the default behavior of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which stores all interactions between users and the AI system. These conversations are collected to enhance OpenAI’s AI models and can be reviewed by moderators to ensure compliance with the company’s terms and services. Although OpenAI introduced a chat history turn-off feature in April, enabling this setting only retains conversations for 30 days, allowing OpenAI to review them for abusive content before permanent deletion.
Potential Risks and Implications
Apple’s cautionary approach to restricting employees from using ChatGPT is well-founded. Given the utility of the AI tool for various tasks, including code improvement and idea brainstorming, there is a legitimate concern that employees may inadvertently enter confidential information regarding Apple’s projects into the system. If such information were to be viewed by one of OpenAI’s moderators, it could lead to privacy breaches or compromise Apple’s competitive advantage. While research has shown that training data extraction from certain language models is possible using chat interfaces, there is currently no evidence suggesting that ChatGPT is vulnerable to such attacks.
Industry-Wide Ban on AI Tools
Apple is not alone in implementing this ban on AI tools that pose potential risks to data security. Other prominent companies, including JP Morgan, Verizon, and Amazon, have also restricted their employees from using similar generative AI tools. These companies are taking proactive measures to protect their intellectual property, sensitive information, and customer data from potential leaks or unauthorized access.
OpenAI’s iOS App and Future Developments
Notably, Apple’s decision comes at a time when OpenAI recently launched an iOS app for ChatGPT, signaling its commitment to making the tool more accessible to users. The app, which supports voice input and is currently available in the US, offers free usage of ChatGPT. OpenAI plans to extend the app’s availability to other countries soon and is also working on an Android version. Despite OpenAI’s efforts to make the AI tool more user-friendly, companies like Apple prioritize data security and opt to exercise caution in their employees’ usage of such technologies.
