Tech giant Apple has reportedly decided to postpone the release of its highly anticipated augmented reality (AR) glasses due to technical challenges, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The lightweight AR glasses were originally slated to debut after the introduction of Apple’s mixed reality (MR) headset. However, these plans have been put on hold, with Apple now planning to launch a lower-cost version of the MR headset in 2024 or early 2025.
Gurman revealed that the cheaper version of the MR headset, featuring iPhone-like hardware, could have a starting price closer to $1,500. This move is seen as part of Apple’s strategy to make immersive technologies more accessible to a wider consumer base. The company aims to provide a more affordable option while still delivering an impressive user experience.
Meanwhile, Apple has recently unveiled its new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, equipped with the next-generation M2 Pro and M2 Max processors. These powerful silicon chips bring enhanced performance and battery life to cater to the demanding needs of professional users. The effects rendering capability on the new MacBook Pro is up to 6 times faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Pro, while color grading is up to 2 times faster.
The delay in the release of Apple’s AR glasses highlights the challenges the company faces as it ventures into the new realm of augmented and virtual reality. Although Apple recognizes the potential for these devices to be a lucrative market, developing a consumer-friendly product has proven to be a complex task for the entire tech industry.
Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset aims to merge the worlds of augmented and virtual reality. It is expected to be unveiled at the company’s Spring event this year, boasting a price tag of $3,000. The high cost is attributed to its utilization of advanced and high-resolution displays, more than 10 cameras, eye-tracking sensors, and a combination of the M2 processor and a dedicated chip specifically designed for handling AR and VR visuals.
To reduce the price point, Apple plans to incorporate chips similar to those found in iPhones rather than the components used in higher-end Mac computers. The mixed reality headset will rival Meta’s VR headset, which debuted in with a price tag of $1,500.
Recent trademark filings indicate that Apple may adopt a dual-device strategy for its upcoming headset. The filings reveal two device names: “Reality Pro” and “Reality One.” It is speculated that “Pro” refers to the initial model, while “One” may denote the more affordable version. The filings also suggest the existence of a dedicated chip called the “Reality Processor.”
The forthcoming mixed-reality headset from Apple is said to leverage displays to create a fully immersive virtual reality environment. Additionally, pass-through cameras will enable augmented reality experiences. Apple’s long-term vision is to eventually replace the iPhone by incorporating its core functionalities into the field of view provided by the AR glasses.
While the delay in the release of Apple’s AR glasses may disappoint some enthusiasts eagerly awaiting their arrival, the company’s strategic shift towards the mixed-reality headset demonstrates its commitment to refining its immersive technology offerings. Apple’s efforts to overcome technical challenges and create consumer-friendly products underscore the importance it places on delivering exceptional user experiences in this emerging industry.
