Automated Immigration Control Takes Flight: Enhancing Travel Experience in Vietnam

In a significant leap towards modernizing its immigration control processes, Vietnam has recently launched its automated immigration system, Autogate, at major airports across the country. The system was officially deployed on August 1, 2023, at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat International Airports and will be introduced at Da Nang, Cam Ranh, and Phu Quoc International Airports from August 15, 2023. This marks the first comprehensive implementation of such technology at airport checkpoints nationwide. The move comes as a positive step in enhancing traveler experiences and streamlining border control procedures.

The Autogate system, spearheaded by the Immigration Management Bureau, aims to simplify and expedite the immigration process for both Vietnamese citizens and foreign nationals entering or leaving the country. During the initial phase, the Autogate service will be available at five major airports, namely Noi Bai, Da Nang, Cam Ranh, Tan Son Nhat, and Phu Quoc.

For Vietnamese citizens, the Autogate service offers great convenience. All Vietnamese nationals are eligible to use Autogate for entry, provided they possess an electronic chip-enabled passport. However, those with non-chip-enabled passports need to register successfully before using the Autogate system for entry. The Autogate system eliminates the need for manual passport checks, resulting in quicker processing times and more efficient border control.

For outbound travel, Vietnamese citizens can utilize Autogate for departure under specific conditions. These conditions include possessing a diplomatic or official passport, holding an APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC), or being a member of a flight crew using Autogate for official duties. Vietnamese citizens who meet these criteria must register to use the Autogate system for departure.

As for foreign nationals, those holding a valid temporary or permanent resident card issued by the competent authorities in Vietnam can also benefit from the Autogate service when exiting the country. By using Autogate, foreign travelers can experience a hassle-free and swift departure process, enhancing their overall travel experience.

The implementation of Autogate is expected to significantly reduce waiting times at immigration checkpoints, thus contributing to the growth of the tourism industry and overall economic development of Vietnam. By automating the immigration process, the system can efficiently process a large number of passengers, resulting in improved border control measures without compromising security.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Public Security plans to continue researching and expanding the eligibility criteria for Autogate usage. The ultimate goal is to accommodate a broader range of travelers, ensuring a seamless and efficient immigration process for all passengers. However, the authorities are committed to upholding the integrity of the system and prioritizing national security, which may require implementing any future expansions with caution.
